 Abstract
Besides achieving the cultural intertwining that such reading presupposes, the novel aims at another type of relationship, namely that between two marginal discourses. Situated at the crossroads between the feminist and the postcolonial discourses, Azar Nafisi's novel encompasses both, without totally committing itself to either. As a feminist text, Nafisi's work deconstructs women's oppression and displaces the center of attention away from men, in favour of women's culture and possibilities. As a postcolonial text, it deconstructs a totalitarian discourse in favour of a marginal one, granting the latter credibility and substance.
